A.E. Robinson Oil Co. expanded into the Gas/Service Station business in the 1980's with the purchase of 4 locations
Robinson purchased the gas stations on Main Street in Dover-Foxcroft and the Triangle in Guilford in 1982. In 1983, Robinson's Fuel Mart in Brownville was added and the station on Route 7 in Corinna was added a year later, 1984. When the flood of 1987 hit Piscataquis County on April 1, it caused quite a setback for A. E. Robinson Oil Co. of Dover-Foxcroft, according to President Jim Robinson. The Piscataquis River overflowed its banks 11.6 feet above flood stage and filled the main office on South Street with 62 inches of water. A few hundred feet down river, video footage of the river tearing away at the retaining wall at the main street bridge made national news. When the retaining wall went, the underground fuel tanks at Robinson's Main Street Mobil went with it. One tank flowed over the Brown's Mill dam and was recovered three miles down stream. The other tank was never found and is thought to have disintegrated in the raging water. A.E. Robinson lost a lot of hand tools and records in the main office because of the water damage. Once things were cleaned up there, they were able to pump gas at the South Street location, but over a year passed before Main Street Mobil reopened after new tanks were in place and the bridge abutment was replaced on Main Street in Dover-Foxcroft. |
